Another day, another tablet. Welcome, HTC ‘flyer’!

HTC the latest company to enter the tablet wars!

Ok guys, at this point, it just feels like “UGH! yet ANOTHER tablet!?”. Well, thats exactly what we have here, a new tablet by HTC! Right from the get-go, I don’t like this tablet. Why? Well, they claim it’ll have a single core 1.5ghz processor for starters. I’m a big believer in dual cores are superior to one super clocked core. They also say it has a 7 inch screen, as well as a 5 megapixel rear camera and a 1.3 megapixel front camera. They also mention a 4000mah battery capable of 4 hours of continuous video, while I am pretty sure the iPad gets 10…soooo yeah. Round that out with an Android 2.4 (yes, it says 2.4) Gingerbread OS with HTC Sense layered on top, which most people agree that Honeycomb should be powering anything over 5 inches (“tablets”) and it doesn’t exactly instill confidence.

Notice how I didn’t say this product would fail though, simply that I didn’t like it. I don’t like it because it doesn’t seem to be a high end product, its more like a mid-upper range. Nonetheless, HTC’s strategy may be price on this one, judging from its somewhat unusual choices in hardware, such as the slightly lacking megapixel cameras and single core processor. I also think most people want a 10 inch screen on their tablet, and 7 is sorta an in-between that nobody really seems to want anymore. However, again that 7 inch screen may reduce component costs, lowering the ultimate bottom line? We’ll find out eventually, I suppose.

Pwnage Tool 4.2 released!

Pwnage Tool 4.2 released by the iPhone Dev Team!

For those of you who have an iPhone and rely on ultrasn0w to unlock your phone, the Dev Team today released a new version of Pwnage Tool to allow updating to the newest 4.2.1 firmware without having to worry about updating your baseband or having to connect your iPhone to your computer each time you wanted to reboot it, as the Dev Team has mentioned this jailbreak is untethered. This allows people like me (who use T-Mobile U.S.A.) to update from 4.1 to 4.2.1. Although I don’t have a list of new features handy, one of them is that firmware 4.2.1 supports airprint, to allow printing directly from your iPhone over wifi to supported printers. 4.2.1 firmware is also required to get free ‘Find My iPhone’ service from Apple, so that you may locate your iPhone as long as it is on and has a signal.

Download PwnageTool now with the official torrent!

HP announces a new iPad competitor of its own

HP has a new tablet competitor to Apple’s iPad

HP have recently revealed that it has a new tablet up its sleeve it calls the ‘TouchPad’ to compete with the current market leader, the Apple iPad. Unfortunately, the tablets seems to be quite far off from actual market availability, as HP only gave vague release date estimates of “Summer” for the WiFi only version, and only mentioned that 3G and 4G versions would also be coming in the future, with no specific time frame. We do know that the device currently looks much like the iPad and also is about the same size and weight, at about 1.5lbs and with a 9.7 inch screen, which is identical in size to the iPad. It will come in 16gb and 32gb versions and pack a fast dual core processor, as well as a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera for video chatting.

Honestly, to me it is still vaporware. When Samsung and Motorola’s tablet releases are imminent, HP isn’t going to raise any eyebrows or pique anybodies interest with a tablet that looks and feels exactly like the current iPad and doesn’t boast any innovative new features or solid release dates. Nonetheless, competition can only be a good thing, and I hope HP surprises us all with an amazing product.

Samsung announces imminent release of Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy S 2 series

Samsung has lifted the veil off of its new Galaxy line of products. Yesterday Samsung releaved the new Galaxy S 2 Smartphone as well as a new tablet, called the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The new Samsung Galaxy S 2 is the natural successor to the popular Galaxy S line. It is uncertain whether there will be serveral versions of the Galaxy S 2 like its predecessor, which varied in many ways such as the inclusion of a slide out keyboard or LED flash features. Currently, there is one version being shown off, and BOY does it look nice! Here are the known specs:

Galaxy S 2 specs:
1ghz dual core processor made by Samsung.
4.27″ Super AMOLED Plus display, an updated version of the much praised Super AMOLED.
Runs Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ out of the box.
2 Megapixel front facing camera
8 Megapixel rear facing camera with LED flash.
Supports HSPA+

RIM’s Playbook may run Android apps!

RIM’s Playbook tablet will run Android apps!

According to Bloomberg, it looks like the 130,000+ app library of Android will run on the company’s iPad competitor, the Playbook. The blackberry maker has been trying to hype up its first entry into the tablet market, where it will more than likely have to compete with the iPad 2, due to its later than expected market appearance. Perhaps RIM thought it needed more compelling features to compete with the likes of the Motorola XOOM and the newly announced HP tablet as well.

The latest ‘iPad 2’ rumors

Latest iPad 2 rumors

Getting back to the iPad successor, many rumors are now swirling around and one of note is the doubled resolution screen. While I also would like it to be fact rather that rumor, I think this would be asking too much from Apple and unlikely. Through much of January there has been a lot of back and fourth between sources claiming it will or it will not have this new double resolution screen, though the momentum and likeliness leaning towards this NOT happening *sadface*. It does seem pretty likely that the new iPad will have a faster processor and GPU though, as well as at least one, if not 2 cameras and a new slimmer and sleeker design. Software wise, it’ll probably have iOS 4.2.1 to begin, or possibly come out of the box with 4.3 who knows? Despite the recent update to Flash which added hardware GPU acceleration, Flash is still unlikely in my opinion…

The ‘Playstation Phone’ makes a superbowl appearance!

The ‘Playstation Phone’ gets a superbowl commercial

The ‘Playstation Phone’, which, for the record, I think will flop, released a new commercial during the Superbowl. Thats some serious marketing muscle they are putting behind this phone for an introduction, isn’t it? As for the release date, it similarly will be officially announced on February 13th, though unlike the Atrix, its official release date is a bit more vague at “sometime in March 2011”. I honestly don’t see how this phone will compete in hype with the Atrix unless it can play some or all of the existing sony titles. To me, it just seems like they took a standard somewhat high end smartphone and put Playstation-like buttons instead of a keyboard. If those buttons do not become a key feature, there is absolutely nothing noteworthy that differentiates this smartphone. Perhaps it is Sony’s attempt to fill in the void while people wait for the PSP2 due much later this year?

The Atrix gets launch details: Dates, AT&T, Prices.

Atrix gets a launch date and pricing! Exclusive to AT&T

Getting back to the Atrix for just a second though, the Atrix seems to have official release dates now. Although nothing new has been revealed lately that we didn’t already know, it still is a very innovative device and it will be available for pre-order on February 13th, and in stores by March 6th for $199 on AT&T with a 2 year contract, and $499 with the laptop dock. Without contract, the laptop dock will cost you $499 on its own, so it is clear they are trying to push this as a bundle.

The Motorola XOOM tablet enters the spotlight

The Motorola XOOM gains traction

Hype for Motorola’s new smartphone the Atrix continues, but Motorola has shifted some of that attention to its Xoom tablet device, which is getting more spotlight the last few days. The Xoom is, as with most new tablets, a direct competitor to the iPad. There is a very good spec comparison chart on droidlife that summerizes the differences between the Xoom and the iPad very well. Needless to say, the iPad being a 10 month old device while the Xoom still waiting for release gave the Xoom quite the advantage in specs. Apple fans will be quick to point out the ‘unfair’ comparison and that iPad 2 is right around the corner so the Xoom should be compared to that. My personal opinion is that if you want to fairly compare two products, they have to exist and be purchasable TODAY. That doesn’t mean people should not compare speculated or announced specs for future devices to get an idea how they differ.

New Motorola Atrix teaser video

Here is a new teaser for the recently announced Motorola Atrix, an innovative high end smartphone that can also power a laptop and a media interface on a TV! This is arguably one of the most hyped upcoming products at the moment:
