Verizon likely to end offering unlimited data “in the not too distant future”

March 2nd, 2011 No comments

Rumors emerged in January that not only would Verizon begin to carry a new CDMA version of the iPhone 4, but that it would be offered with an unlimited data plan, something that AT&T had stopped doing for their version of the iPhone 4. This caused AT&T to quietly resume offering unlimited data to customers that asked about this option, but now even Verizon seems likely to end unlimited data offerings as soon as this summer.

I think offering unlimited data was a way that Verizon chose to differentiate their iPhone 4 offering from the existing AT&T one, to try to lure customers to Verizon’s version of the handset. Since it is likely that Apple will release the next ‘iPhone 5’ in the June/July timeframe, Verizon could choose to move swiftly to capped data plans before that product becomes available on their network. Having the iPhone 4 halfway through the product cycle may have been a good way for Verizon to test the waters to know what to expect going forward. If the demand for the Verizon iPhone is lower than Verizon would like, they could continue to offer unlimited data in a continuing effort to lure customers to their network.

Google Nexus One Android getting Gingerbread OTA

March 1st, 2011 No comments

Well, it looks like the Nexus one is finally getting the latest and greatest version of Android. The Nexus One is the first officially Google branded smartphone, and one of its main selling points was that it would always get the latest and greatest version of Android first, but many started complaining when the Nexus S was released in December with Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ and it was nowhere to be seen on the Nexus One for many months. Well Nexus One owners, the wait seems to finally be coming to an end, with Android 2.3.3 being rolled out over the air. Let us know how you like it!

Motorola Atrix and Xoom launch!

February 26th, 2011 No comments

So, if you haven’t noticed already, the Motorola Atrix and Xoom release dates have been pushed up to February 24th…earlier than what we originally thought, and that date has passed already. In other words, the Atrix and the Xoom (Motorola’s new flagship smartphone and tablet, respectively) have been released!

The Xoom is available for $799 and requires a data contract with Verizon, making it even more expensive. The good news is, the Xoom is 4G ready, meaning it can get 4G once the network is ready for it. Another reason for its rather high price of entry is because it is offered with 32gb of built in memory, while the current iPad starts at 16gb. It could also be argued that the Motorola Xoom is far more capable than the iPad, with a faster dual core 1ghz Nvidio Tegra 2 processor, much more ram at 1gb, and front and back cameras. Lets not forget that Apple has just announced a media event for March 2nd however, and that new iPads will likely be competitive with the Xoom in specs, but may undercut the price.

The Atrix, along with its innovative laptop dock, have also launched. The Atrix seems to be getting good reviews, but the dock is not. The dock is also very expensive, at $499 solo. Nonetheless, I hope other manufacturers at least consider this feature and hopefully improve upon it with lower price points and better software.

How to Jailbreak and unlock your iPhone on iOS 4.2.1 using PwnageTool 4.2

February 25th, 2011 No comments

Here is a new original video for you guys made in house. The video will show you how to safely update the iOS firmware on your iPhone or most other iDevices using PwnageTool. By updating using PwnageTool, you can preserve your old baseband. If your old baseband was unlockable, you can still unlock it even with new iOS firmware installed, which is why PwnageTool is so great.

The video also explains how to use Tiny Umbrella to save your old SHSH blobs so you can downgrade your iOS version later if you wish to do so. Using Tiny Umbrella, you can save your SHSH blobs without even jailbreaking your device!

NTT Docomo testing LTE Advanced networks capable of 1Gbps down and 200Mbps up!

February 15th, 2011 No comments

Taken straight from their press release:

“TOKYO, JAPAN, February 7, 2011 — NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that on January 27 it was pre-licensed by the Kanto Bureau of Telecommunications of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications for field experiments of LTE-Advanced, a true fourth-generation (4G) mobile communication technology that provides data rates much faster than currently possible with LTE.

Once the license is issued, DOCOMO will begin field experiments of LTE-Advanced in real radio environments in the cities of Yokosuka and Sagamihara in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

In the field experiments, the performance of key technologies for LTE-Advanced implemented in the experimental equipment (see attachment) will be evaluated in indoor and outdoor environments.

DOCOMO has already confirmed the performance of LTE-Advanced technologies using radio environment simulators in its R&D center, achieving transmission data rates of approximately 1 Gbps in the downlink and 200 Mbps in the uplink.

LTE-Advanced, as the name suggests, is an evolved version of LTE, which DOCOMO currently offers on a commercial basis under the Xiâ„¢ (“Crossy”) brand in Japan. LTE-Advanced is backward compatible with LTE, which will enable a smooth migration from DOCOMO’s existing LTE network.”

Notice the text above in bold. 1Gbps downloads mean 100 megabytes per second! And 20 megabytes per second upload! You’ll need an SSD in your device for the network to be the bottleneck in downloads, since 100 megabytes a second is the speed at which modern harddrives read local data! Wow, just wow to have this kind of speed ANYWHERE is amazing. And if they are testing it now, its probably not far off from primetime.

I mean, at least in Japan. Doh.

Nvidia announce quad core SOC, ready by August for tablets

February 15th, 2011 No comments

The above photo provided by Engadget is, to me, a perfect illustration of just how far we have come, as that tiny chip is a Quad core SOC announced by Nvidia. Code named Kal-El (which is superman’s original name back on his home planet), this little guy is expected to be availble in tablets around the August timeframe and is roughly twice as powerful as current dual core Tegra cpu’s used in current smartphones and tablets, as well as 3 times as powerful in graphics processing, thanks to its TWELVE cores! Pwnage Tool 4.2 released!

Pwnage Tool 4.2 released by the iPhone Dev Team!

For those of you who have an iPhone and rely on ultrasn0w to unlock your phone, the Dev Team today released a new version of Pwnage Tool to allow updating to the newest 4.2.1 firmware without having to worry about updating your baseband or having to connect your iPhone to your computer each time you wanted to reboot it, as the Dev Team has mentioned this jailbreak is untethered. This allows people like me (who use T-Mobile U.S.A.) to update from 4.1 to 4.2.1. Although I don’t have a list of new features handy, one of them is that firmware 4.2.1 supports airprint, to allow printing directly from your iPhone over wifi to supported printers. 4.2.1 firmware is also required to get free ‘Find My iPhone’ service from Apple, so that you may locate your iPhone as long as it is on and has a signal.

HP announces a new iPad competitor of its own

February 15th, 2011 No comments

HP has a new tablet competitor to Apple’s iPad

HP have recently revealed that it has a new tablet up its sleeve it calls the ‘TouchPad’ to compete with the current market leader, the Apple iPad. Unfortunately, the tablets seems to be quite far off from actual market availability, as HP only gave vague release date estimates of “Summer” for the WiFi only version, and only mentioned that 3G and 4G versions would also be coming in the future, with no specific time frame. We do know that the device currently looks much like the iPad and also is about the same size and weight, at about 1.5lbs and with a 9.7 inch screen, which is identical in size to the iPad. It will come in 16gb and 32gb versions and pack a fast dual core processor, as well as a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera for video chatting.

Honestly, to me it is still vaporware. When Samsung and Motorola’s tablet releases are imminent, HP isn’t going to raise any eyebrows or pique anybodies interest with a tablet that looks and feels exactly like the current iPad and doesn’t boast any innovative new features or solid release dates. Nonetheless, competition can only be a good thing, and I hope HP surprises us all with an amazing product.

Samsung announces imminent release of Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy S 2 series

Samsung has lifted the veil off of its new Galaxy line of products. Yesterday Samsung releaved the new Galaxy S 2 Smartphone as well as a new tablet, called the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The new Samsung Galaxy S 2 is the natural successor to the popular Galaxy S line. It is uncertain whether there will be serveral versions of the Galaxy S 2 like its predecessor, which varied in many ways such as the inclusion of a slide out keyboard or LED flash features. Currently, there is one version being shown off, and BOY does it look nice! Here are the known specs:

Galaxy S 2 specs:
1ghz dual core processor made by Samsung.
4.27″ Super AMOLED Plus display, an updated version of the much praised Super AMOLED.
Runs Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ out of the box.
2 Megapixel front facing camera
8 Megapixel rear facing camera with LED flash.
Supports HSPA+

The ‘Playstation Phone’ makes a superbowl appearance!

The ‘Playstation Phone’ gets a superbowl commercial

The ‘Playstation Phone’, which, for the record, I think will flop, released a new commercial during the Superbowl. Thats some serious marketing muscle they are putting behind this phone for an introduction, isn’t it? As for the release date, it similarly will be officially announced on February 13th, though unlike the Atrix, its official release date is a bit more vague at “sometime in March 2011”. I honestly don’t see how this phone will compete in hype with the Atrix unless it can play some or all of the existing sony titles. To me, it just seems like they took a standard somewhat high end smartphone and put Playstation-like buttons instead of a keyboard. If those buttons do not become a key feature, there is absolutely nothing noteworthy that differentiates this smartphone. Perhaps it is Sony’s attempt to fill in the void while people wait for the PSP2 due much later this year?
