Well, its here, the iPad 2. If you want a quick summary of what its about, the picture above does a great job of telling you in roughly 1012 words or so (the picture being worth 1000 words).

The iPad 2 has a brand new design. Its 33% thinner according to Apple at just 8.8mm compared to the older iPad at 13.2mm. That is actually the first time I’ve realized the thinness of the old iPad in millimeters, but thats OK. I actually caught something curious here, as you can see in the Engadget live blog of the event.

Verizon likely to end offering unlimited data “in the not too distant future”

March 2nd, 2011 No comments

Rumors emerged in January that not only would Verizon begin to carry a new CDMA version of the iPhone 4, but that it would be offered with an unlimited data plan, something that AT&T had stopped doing for their version of the iPhone 4. This caused AT&T to quietly resume offering unlimited data to customers that asked about this option, but now even Verizon seems likely to end unlimited data offerings as soon as this summer.

I think offering unlimited data was a way that Verizon chose to differentiate their iPhone 4 offering from the existing AT&T one, to try to lure customers to Verizon’s version of the handset. Since it is likely that Apple will release the next ‘iPhone 5’ in the June/July timeframe, Verizon could choose to move swiftly to capped data plans before that product becomes available on their network. Having the iPhone 4 halfway through the product cycle may have been a good way for Verizon to test the waters to know what to expect going forward. If the demand for the Verizon iPhone is lower than Verizon would like, they could continue to offer unlimited data in a continuing effort to lure customers to their network.

Apple’s OSX targeted by a new Trojan

March 1st, 2011 No comments

Thats right! Apple’s OSX has yet another new virus that is specifically targeting it. I guess this is a sign of the increasing popularity of OSX, or simply a result of Apple provoking virus writers with their campaign making Windows seem as though it is virus laden and that Macs do not have viruses.

The new Trojan, which the creators call “BlackHole RAT”, apparently uses some exposed backdoor holes in the operating system and gain quite a bit of access, including the ability to run scripts, display fake password required boxes to attempt to phish passwords, and even place text files on the desktop. What could be really annoying is that it would also allow the attackers to shut down or restart your computer, displaying a mocking message:

“I am a Trojan Horse, so i have infected your Mac Computer. I know, most people think Macs can’t be infected, but look, you ARE Infected! I have full controll over your Computer and i can do everything I want, and you can do nothing to prevent it.

So, Im a very new Virus, under Development, so there will be much more functions when im finished.”

I think I just overloaded on smug.

Motorola Atrix and Xoom launch!

February 26th, 2011 No comments

So, if you haven’t noticed already, the Motorola Atrix and Xoom release dates have been pushed up to February 24th…earlier than what we originally thought, and that date has passed already. In other words, the Atrix and the Xoom (Motorola’s new flagship smartphone and tablet, respectively) have been released!

The Xoom is available for $799 and requires a data contract with Verizon, making it even more expensive. The good news is, the Xoom is 4G ready, meaning it can get 4G once the network is ready for it. Another reason for its rather high price of entry is because it is offered with 32gb of built in memory, while the current iPad starts at 16gb. It could also be argued that the Motorola Xoom is far more capable than the iPad, with a faster dual core 1ghz Nvidio Tegra 2 processor, much more ram at 1gb, and front and back cameras. Lets not forget that Apple has just announced a media event for March 2nd however, and that new iPads will likely be competitive with the Xoom in specs, but may undercut the price.

The Atrix, along with its innovative laptop dock, have also launched. The Atrix seems to be getting good reviews, but the dock is not. The dock is also very expensive, at $499 solo. Nonetheless, I hope other manufacturers at least consider this feature and hopefully improve upon it with lower price points and better software.

Here is a new original video for you guys made in house. The video will show you how to safely update the iOS firmware on your iPhone or most other iDevices using PwnageTool. By updating using PwnageTool, you can preserve your old baseband. If your old baseband was unlockable, you can still unlock it even with new iOS firmware installed, which is why PwnageTool is so great.

The video also explains how to use Tiny Umbrella to save your old SHSH blobs so you can downgrade your iOS version later if you wish to do so. Using Tiny Umbrella, you can save your SHSH blobs without even jailbreaking your device!

New ‘iPad 2’ almost official: Apple sends out official invitations to a media event March 2nd.

February 24th, 2011 No comments

The above is an official image that accompanied the official invitations sent out by Apple. As you can see, the image is of a enlarged calendar icon used in iOS showing a March 2nd date, along with one corner peeling away showing an iPad, hinting strongly that this event will be about iPad, and almost certainly means they will announce the next iPad at this event. I suppose Apple is not as cryptic as they used to be when they announce media events, but then again, almost everyone is sure that it will be iPad focused, so why hide it?

The most credible rumors for the iPad 2 allows us to make predictions about what to expect. Likely new features include updated graphics, a new dual core processor, and at least 1, if not 2 new cameras. Slightly more vague rumors say the screen will likely be the same resolution, but will address the reflectivity of the original iPad, and perhaps be a slightly nicer screen in some way, such as contrast or brightness, or possibly slightly better viewing angles. Most rumors also say the device will be slimmer and lighter in weight, and have a brand new industrial design. Also likely is iOS 4.3 with facetime support for video chatting on the device.

New Macbook Pros with quad core Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt I/O.

February 24th, 2011 No comments

As anticipated, Apple has released new Macbook Pros today which is basically a typical refresh that they do every ~9 months for the line. Although earlier than the ~March timeframe that was originally estimated, the new Macbook Pros utilize the new 32nm “Sandy Bridge” quad core processors from Intel. You read that right, Macbook Pros (15 inches and up) now have quad cores!

Somehow, despite being familiar with Sandy Bridge processors and the new Macbook Pros likelyhood to use them, I never put 2 and 2 together to conclude the new Macbook Pros would likely have quad cores. Well, this DOES “change everything” for me, since I was planning to build a quad core hackintosh. If I can have quad core Sandy Bridge in a Macbook Pro, I’d rather get that instead and not have to deal with all the hacking, higher power consumption, lack of portability, and having to make sure bluetooth and wifi worked well. I would also miss the compatibility with the Apple Remote, and it doesn’t hurt that laptops basically have a built in UPS.

Pwnage Tool 4.2 released by the iPhone Dev Team!

For those of you who have an iPhone and rely on ultrasn0w to unlock your phone, the Dev Team today released a new version of Pwnage Tool to allow updating to the newest 4.2.1 firmware without having to worry about updating your baseband or having to connect your iPhone to your computer each time you wanted to reboot it, as the Dev Team has mentioned this jailbreak is untethered. This allows people like me (who use T-Mobile U.S.A.) to update from 4.1 to 4.2.1. Although I don’t have a list of new features handy, one of them is that firmware 4.2.1 supports airprint, to allow printing directly from your iPhone over wifi to supported printers. 4.2.1 firmware is also required to get free ‘Find My iPhone’ service from Apple, so that you may locate your iPhone as long as it is on and has a signal.

HP announces a new iPad competitor of its own

HP has a new tablet competitor to Apple’s iPad

HP have recently revealed that it has a new tablet up its sleeve it calls the ‘TouchPad’ to compete with the current market leader, the Apple iPad. Unfortunately, the tablets seems to be quite far off from actual market availability, as HP only gave vague release date estimates of “Summer” for the WiFi only version, and only mentioned that 3G and 4G versions would also be coming in the future, with no specific time frame. We do know that the device currently looks much like the iPad and also is about the same size and weight, at about 1.5lbs and with a 9.7 inch screen, which is identical in size to the iPad. It will come in 16gb and 32gb versions and pack a fast dual core processor, as well as a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera for video chatting.

Honestly, to me it is still vaporware. When Samsung and Motorola’s tablet releases are imminent, HP isn’t going to raise any eyebrows or pique anybodies interest with a tablet that looks and feels exactly like the current iPad and doesn’t boast any innovative new features or solid release dates. Nonetheless, competition can only be a good thing, and I hope HP surprises us all with an amazing product.
