Nintendo 3DS North American launch date confirmed

Nintendo appears to have confirmed the North American release date of their new portable system, the Nintendo 3DS. That date is March 27th, 2011, and will release with 18 available games, most with an MSRP of $39.99. 5 of those games will be from Nintendo themselves, while the remaining 13 would be from third party developers. Some of the games available immediately would include Street Fighter IV 3D edition and Pilotwings Resort, while games like The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D will be available by the end of 2011. It sounds like there will be a lot of 3D remakes!

Here is the details of all of the launch titles from the Nintendo press release:

Games released directly by Nintendo:

Pilotwings Resortâ„¢, an aerial adventure featuring airplanes, hang gliders and rocket belts. Players soar above tropical Wuhu Island in 3D as they complete missions or snap pictures.

Steel Diverâ„¢, a submarine game that involves strategy and combat. The 3D visuals give players the sensation that they are looking into a miniature aquarium as they control the sub’s speed, depth and pitch, and fire torpedoes.

nintendogs™ + cats, a game that lets players interact with realistic puppies – and kittens – in a variety of fun ways. There are three versions of the software, each with different starting breeds: French bulldog, toy poodle and golden retriever. But in each version players can unlock and enjoy more than 20 different breeds.

Third party releases:

Super Street Fighter® IV 3D Edition from CAPCOM
The Simsâ„¢ 3 from EA
Madden NFL Football from EA SPORTS
Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D from Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.
LEGO® Star Wars® III: The Clone Wars™ from LucasArts™
RIDGE RACER® 3D from NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc.
Super Monkey Ballâ„¢ 3D from SEGA
BUST-A-MOVE UNIVERSEâ„¢ from Square-Enix, Inc.
Asphaltâ„¢ 3D from UBISOFT
Combat of Giantsâ„¢: Dinosaurs 3D from UBISOFT
Rayman® 3D from UBISOFT
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Shadow Wars from UBISOFT

The list of available games will increase to at least 30 by early June, right when E3 comes around, according to Nintendo. Nintendo also says the 3DS will come preloaded with a variety of fun games such as ‘Face Raiders’ which takes advantage of the build in camera.

The Nintendo 3DS will also be able to play nearly every game that was originally made for the regular DS, making the amount of titles you can play immediately upon launch of the 3DS actually much larger than just the 18 created specifically for the 3DS. The 3DS has an MSRP of $249 and will come in Black, in addition to the Blue pictured above. The 3DS will come bundled with a 2GB SD card. It also comes with a warning not to play for more than 30 minutes at a time, which irks me. I’m still not convinced that 3D is all that great.
